After Sunset, Lutry. 17.03.2026

This original plein-air oil painting was created in Lutry, Switzerland, shortly after sunset on the shores of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). Painted directly on location, the work captures the quiet transition between day and night, when the last traces of light remain suspended above the lake and the village begins to dissolve into evening tones.

Lutry is situated at the entrance of the Lavaux region, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape where vineyards descend toward the water and historic streets open onto the lake. The changing light of Lac Léman gives this landscape a constantly shifting character, especially during the brief moments after sunset when colours become softer, deeper and more atmospheric. On this March evening, the glow remaining above the horizon reflected across the lake while the village entered a quieter rhythm. The distinction between water, sky and distant landscape gradually disappeared, leaving subtle transitions of colour and light. Rather than depicting a specific landmark, the painting focuses on the atmosphere of this fleeting moment, when daylight has ended but night has not yet fully arrived.

Working outdoors at the edge of daylight requires responding quickly to changing conditions. The colours transform within minutes, and each brushstroke becomes part of an attempt to preserve a passing state of light before it vanishes completely.

This work belongs to my ongoing plein-air series dedicated to Lutry, Lavaux and the landscapes surrounding Lac Léman. Each painting records a real encounter with a specific place, season and atmosphere observed directly in nature.
